The Anniversary of the Passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej

In Grateful Remembrance of the Boundless Royal Grace of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (King Rama IX)

Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Royal Inauguration of Buddhapadipa Temple, London

Buddhapadipa Temple, London, United Kingdom, is the first Thai Buddhist temple established in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. It was founded through the cooperation of the Royal Thai Government and Thai Buddhists residing in the United Kingdom. The temple was graciously granted royal patronage by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who also bestowed upon it the name “Buddhapadipa Temple”, meaning “The Light of the Buddha”, on 30 May 1966.

His Majesty also graciously presented an ancient Buddha image in the Sukhothai artistic style, depicting the Buddha in the Earth-Touching Posture (Māravijaya Mudrā). The sacred image was given the name “Phra Buddhapadipa”, commonly known among devotees as “Luang Por Dam”, to be enshrined as the royal Buddha image of the temple.

On 1 August 1966, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, and His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who at that time held the royal title of His Royal Highness Prince Vajiralongkorn (seated behind Their Majesties), graciously presided over the official unveiling of the name plaque of “Buddhapadipa Temple” in East Sheen, London.

This historic occasion marked a significant milestone in the propagation of Thai Buddhism in the Western world and reflected His Majesty’s royal aspiration to preserve, support, and promote the flourishing of Buddhism throughout the international community.

Buddhapadipa Temple subsequently relocated to its present site in Wimbledon, London, in 1976. A traditional Thai-style ordination hall (Ubosot) was later constructed, establishing the temple as a centre for monastic ceremonies, Buddhist education, meditation practice, and the propagation of Thai Theravāda Buddhism throughout the United Kingdom and continental Europe to the present day.
